Two undocumented Nigerian nationals have been arrested in South Africa on drug-related charges following a major police operation in Mpumalanga.
The suspects, Ikemukwu Benjermin Ezirim, 39, and Christian Valentine Uchenna, 37, were detained after appearing in the Volkrust Magistrate's Court on Friday, November 29, 2024. They face charges related to the possession and trafficking of illicit substances.
Police Operation
Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks), confirmed the arrests, stating that the operation was part of a broader initiative to combat organized crime. The operation, carried out on Thursday in Volkrust, involved multiple units, including the Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Serious Corruption Investigation, Serious Commercial Crime Investigation, and the Standerton K9 Unit.
The investigation was launched after authorities received intelligence about drug activities at a specific location. Upon arriving, the suspects attempted to destroy evidence by flushing some of the drugs down a toilet. Despite their efforts, police arrested the men and uncovered more drugs hidden in the vehicle’s body and tyres.
Seized Items and Arrest Details
During the search, authorities confiscated drugs valued at approximately R1.2 million, R2,000 in cash, five cellphones worth R15,000, a silver weighing scale, and a Silver Mercedes-Benz C180, estimated at R400,000. Additionally, it was discovered that the suspects were residing in South Africa without valid documents.
Both men were charged and remanded in custody. Their case has been adjourned to December 9, 2024, for a bail application.
Community Cooperation
Nicholas Jacobus Gerber, the provincial head of the Hawks, commended community members who provided valuable information leading to the suspects' arrest. He emphasized that public cooperation is crucial in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime in the region.
