A Nigerian man, Adebayo Kola, and his girlfriend, Bamidele Funmilayo, have been charged before the Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting Kola’s former partner, Temiosoro Kehinde.
The couple appeared before Magistrate O.I. Lebi on charges of assault, public disturbance, and emotional abuse stemming from an incident that occurred on November 18, 2023, at Owe Akala Street, Oke Aro, Akure.
Prosecutor Augustine Omhenimhen alleged that the defendants physically attacked Kehinde, hurled demeaning insults at her, and conducted themselves in a manner likely to breach public peace. Describing the actions as both dehumanising and emotionally damaging, Omhenimhen revealed that the offences contravened Sections 351, 249(D), and 15(1) of the Ondo State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law of 2021.
Both Kola and Funmilayo pleaded not guilty to the charges. Omhenimhen informed the court of plans to present three witnesses to substantiate the allegations, prompting a request for an adjournment.
Defence counsel Lawrence Onu did not contest the request but appealed for lenient bail conditions for the accused. Magistrate Lebi granted bail at N400,000 each, requiring two sureties in like sum, and adjourned the case to December 9, 2024, for trial.
This case highlights the enforcement of laws designed to protect individuals from violence and emotional abuse in Ondo State.
