The suspect, identified as Miracle Mwakalor from Umubele village in Awka-South Local Government Area, was arrested on December 6, 2024, by operatives of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SPACS).
State police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrest in a statement, revealing that an AK-47 rifle and a magazine were recovered from the suspect. The weapon had been concealed in the roof of an apartment in Ubuofu, Awka.
“Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives burst the den of a criminal gang during a meeting where they were planning an attack in Nibo, Awka-South Local Government,” Ikenga said. “While other members of the gang fled, the suspect was apprehended and confessed to the crime during interrogation.”
The raid, conducted at 2:30 p.m., disrupted the gang’s plans to launch an assault. The suspect later led the police to the hidden weapon, which was promptly recovered.
Efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining members of the gang, who are currently at large.
The police command reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents in Anambra State and urged the public to provide information that could assist in apprehending other criminals in the area.
