Operatives from the Zone 2 Command in Lagos have arrested a 55-year-old man, Gbenga Odunaya, for allegedly assaulting his wife, Muibat Laminat, after a dispute over property documents.
According to police reports, the conflict began when Laminat claimed that her late father had willed a property to her, which she sold for N11 million. She deposited the proceeds into her husband’s bank account, using part of the money to build a house, while Odunaya used the remainder to purchase vehicles.
Tensions arose after the couple separated, with Laminat demanding the documents for the house she financed. Instead of providing the documents, Odunaya allegedly attacked her, leaving her with visible injuries.
The incident was reported to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Adegoke Fayoade, who instructed Odunaya's arrest.
Odunaya was subsequently charged before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos Island on two counts: assault occasioning bodily harm and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. Police prosecutor ASP Jimoh Joseph informed the court that the offenses, which took place in 2020 in Noforija, Epe, violate sections 173 and 168(4) of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
The charges read: "That you, Gbenga Odunaya, in 2020 at Noforija, Epe, Lagos, did assault Muibat Laminat, inflicting injuries on her."
Odunaya pleaded not guilty to the charges. Magistrate Adetunji granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, but he was remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Facility until the bail conditions are met.
The case has been adjourned to 15 January 2025 for further mention.
