Rev. Canon Olowolagba, the Anglican bishop abducted along with his wife and children in Ondo State, has been released after spending several days in captivity. The family was kidnapped along Iboropa Road in the Akoko North-East Local Government Area while traveling through the region.
Sources confirmed that their release was secured on Saturday after a ransom was paid. Initially, the kidnappers demanded ₦75 million, but after negotiations, the amount was reduced to ₦15 million. The ransom was raised through contributions from the family, church, and various associations linked to the bishop and his wife.
The abduction occurred while the family was en route from Ipesi through Isua Akoko. The victims were kidnapped between Isua and Ise-Akoko, and their disappearance was only noticed the following morning when they failed to reach their destination in Ikaram or return home. Those abducted included the bishop, his wife, their university-aged daughter from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, and a nine-year-old girl.
Local authorities, including the Ondo State security outfit Amotekun, were alerted and worked alongside local hunters to search for the victims. Chief Adetunji Adeleye, Amotekun’s commander, confirmed that efforts were ongoing to locate and rescue the family. “We have notified the hunters and reported the matter to the police in both Ikare and Isua. Our operatives and the hunters have been combing the area,” Rev. Bada explained.
While earlier reports suggested a delay in police involvement, Amotekun later confirmed the abduction and the successful release of the victims. Chief Adeleye, while acknowledging the family’s freedom, refrained from sharing further details about the conditions of their release.
“The pastor and his family have been freed,” Adeleye confirmed, though he did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding the release.
