Tension grips the Akoko North-East region of Ondo State as the abductors of Rev. Canon Olowolagba, his wife, and their children have demanded a hefty ransom of N75 million for their release. The family was kidnapped along the Iboropa road while traveling between Isua and Ise-Akoko.
The victims, which include a nine-year-old girl and a university student from Adekunle Ajasin University, were reported missing when they failed to arrive at their destination in Ikaram. According to Rt. Rev. Babajide Bada, Bishop of Akoko Anglican Diocese, it wasn’t until the following morning that their absence was noticed, sparking a frantic search.
The kidnappers initially demanded N75 million but have reportedly shifted their demands multiple times, reducing it to N10 million, then raising it to N15 million, and now returning to the original amount. Efforts by church members and community groups to gather funds have so far been insufficient to secure their release.
In response, Ondo State’s security outfit, Amotekun Corps, has launched a rescue mission in collaboration with hunters and local vigilantes, combing the forests in search of the captives. Amotekun Commander Chief Adetunji Adeleye confirmed their active involvement, emphasizing coordination with other security agencies.
Community leaders, including Sheikh Basiru Aminu of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Akoko North-West, have urged residents to unite in prayer for the victims’ safe return.
However, the state police command, represented by spokesperson Funmi Odunlami, stated that the case had not been officially reported to any police station.
As efforts to rescue the family continue, calls for stronger security measures in the region have intensified, highlighting growing concerns over the rising trend of abductions in the area.
