The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, has issued a statement cautioning against refusing police officers access to or exit from private properties, describing such actions as an offence. Edafe’s remarks came in response to a viral video showing a confrontation between a group of young men and armed individuals dressed as police officers.

In the video, the young men, who identified themselves as content creators, refused to open their gate to the armed men, expressing concerns about their masked appearance. One of the masked individuals fired a shot into the air, and another eventually scaled the fence to gain access to the building.

Reacting to the incident on Saturday, Edafe acknowledged that the use of masks by police officers is prohibited, labeling it a "red flag." However, he emphasized that barring police officers from entering or leaving a property is also unlawful.

“Wearing a mask as a policeman is a red flag and not allowed in policing. However, we should stop thinking it is right to lock the police either outside or inside; that’s another offence on its own,” Edafe wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

He further noted that the police are investigating the circumstances of the incident and are awaiting information about its location to ensure a thorough probe. Edafe also questioned why the young men in the video claimed they were not internet fraudsters, pointing out that the officers had not made any such allegations during the encounter.

The incident has sparked conversations about the balance between citizens’ rights and police authority, as well as the need for professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.

No problem. They should ask the EFCC the consequence of invading people's homes at unGodly hours without permission.

What stupidity is he saying? Do they have a warrant to enter my house? Imagine a police officer saying this. It just shows we are in a lawless society.
