Tension gripped the Iwo community of Osun State following a brutal ambush that claimed the life of an operative of the Osun State Security Network Agency, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps.
The slain officer, identified as Lamidi Abiodun, was killed on Wednesday at the Papa boundary area of Iwo, after a team of Amotekun operatives and local vigilantes responded to a distress call from farmers whose land was reportedly under attack.
According to a statement issued by the Amotekun Corps Commander, Isaac Omoyele, through the corps' spokesperson, Yusuf Idowu Abass, the security team was ambushed by a group of heavily armed men suspected to be led by a notorious gang leader known as Akeem Olofa.
“Abiodun was fatally struck in the head with a machete after bullets fired by the assailants failed to penetrate his body,” the statement revealed, describing the attack as sudden and ferocious. “He died instantly at the scene, displaying uncommon bravery in the line of duty.”
The incident also left one vigilante member, Alex Sola, with a gunshot wound to the leg, while another operative from the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Nurudeen Alowonle, remains missing, heightening fears over his safety.
The late Abiodun’s remains have been deposited at a local mortuary as investigations continue. Amotekun officials say the case has been handed over to the **Nigeria Police Division in Iwo for deeper probing and swift action.
Describing the loss as a “deeply painful blow,” the Amotekun Corps paid tribute to Abiodun's dedication and courage. “He was a devoted officer who died protecting his people,” the corps commander stated solemnly.
Efforts are currently underway, in collaboration with other security agencies, to track down the attackers and bring them to justice. “We will not rest until those responsible for this barbaric act are apprehended,” Abass vowed.
The Corps also urged residents of Iwo and surrounding areas to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that could aid the ongoing manhunt.
Despite the tragedy, the Amotekun Corps reaffirmed its commitment to defending lives and property in Osun State, promising to intensify security patrols across rural communities.
