It will come as little surprise to anyone who has ever been rejected, but a broken heart really does hurt.
Experiments show that being dumped by a lover activates brain regions more usually associated with processing physical pain, such as the searing sensation of being burnt.
The finding could help explain why being given the heave-ho hurts so much and for so long.
The intriguing idea comes from an American study of 40 men and women whose relationships had ended against their wishes.
All said the experience had left them deeply hurt.
First, their brains were scanned as they looked at pictures of their ex and thought about him or her. Then, they were scanned again as they looked at a picture of a friend and remembered a happy time they had spent together.
Finally, they underwent another series of scans as a probe heated to different temperatures was pressed against their arm.

If the heart broke, the person is going down to that other side of the world. I don't buy that idea of broken heart talk... is simply a dream/imagination shattered, what one have to do is to pick up courage and start all over. Nothing like heart broken .
