Girl who are these people to you. Is the wife from your side or the husband? Either way, you still have to tell them that he is there. In fact ask them to come and see it for themselves.

I think ur interferance was a big mistake,next tym stay out of other's family issue,bt nw,jst stay calm as u suggested,nd wen the wife calls nd ask if her hubby is bak(take note,if she asks),u can say yes in a normal way,nd if she accuses u,jst tell her u thought she knew,that's y u didn't bother 2 tell her.best of luck.
