Am not a sadist but if the story is to be believed 100% as being told then I can only advice Nigerians to learn from naivety of this young man. If men in uniform order you, the simplest you should is obey. I can understand why at that point he felt it had a chance against the military. My verdict is that he's the cause of his won death.
The whole the area was ripped apart with violence and the least anyone  should do at the time is to show oneself as potential suspect. YES one can't 100% rely on Nigerian force for often resulting to violence but we also know that force men all over the world are trained not to shoot or violently attack anyone whose hands are up to signify surrender. He hope he rest in peace after being architect of his death.
