The Federal Government is set to begin the survey for the construction of three coal-fired power stations, each with a capacity of 1,000mw in Enugu, Gombe and Kogi States.

Special Adviser to the Minister of Power on Coal Development, Prof. Pius Okeke, told THISDAY Tuesday that all was set for the government to begin three-dimensional seismic survey for the projects.

Okeke, who is also a former Managing Director of the Nigerian Coal Corporation, said the projects would be sited in Kogi, Enugu and Gombe States. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) had earlier approved the construction of the three power plants to boost electricity supply in the country.

In a related development, the chairman of a consortium led by Sepco III Electric Power Construction Corporation of China and an indigenous company, Pacific Energy, which built Olorunsogo Power Station in Ogun State, Dr. Deji Adeleke, said Tuesday that the consortium would submit bids for 1,200mw coal plant in Benue State.

Speaking during the inauguration of Sepco 111-Pacific Power Training Institute at Olorunsogo, Adeleke stated that the contract would worth $4billion.

“I want to announce to the House also that Sepco III and Pacific Energy, very soon; we are going to bid now for the coal-fired plant in Benue State. It is going to be a 1,200mw project. It is a $4billion project,” he said.

Project Manager of Sepco III Electric Power Corporation, Mr. Li Xianlai said his company embarked on building training centre after it observed that the “main cause of insufficient power in Nigeria is inadequate manpower to operate, maintain and run the existing power plants.”

Chinese Consular-General, Dr. Liu Xianfa, said his country is as good as the United States in the power industry.

He stated that China-Nigeria Trade volume rose from $10.8billion in 2011
