A UK-based Nigerian woman, Christy Oluwabunmi Oyewole, has lodged a petition with the Ogun State House of Assembly, accusing a traditional ruler, Oba Adekeye Adeyemi Olanrewaju—the Abepa of Joga Orile in Yewa North Local Government Area—of fraud, deception, and emotional exploitation under the guise of marriage.
In the detailed petition dated Thursday and addressed to Speaker Daisi Elemide, Oyewole claimed the monarch duped her out of over ₦195 million in cash and valuables after allegedly tricking her into a sham marriage. The assets, she stated, included ₦65 million in cash, gold jewelry worth ₦120 million, phones valued at ₦10.8 million, and other personal items.
"It is with pain that I write to the Ogun State House of Assembly about my ordeal in the hands of an Ogun monarch," she wrote. "Oba Adekeye Adeyemi Olanrewaju has fraudulently taken all my life savings."
According to Oyewole, the ordeal began on June 30, 2022, when the monarch approached her with romantic intentions, promising to marry her and help grow her business. At the time, she was still legally married but in a strained relationship due to domestic abuse. She alleged that Oba Adekeye offered to help with divorce proceedings—only for her to later discover the divorce and marriage documents he presented were forged.
“He pretended to be in love with me and vowed to support my business,” Oyewole stated. “I was manipulated into transferring money and giving him my valuables. Eventually, I discovered he had used the same scheme to deceive at least five other women.”
In a shocking twist, the petitioner further alleged that the monarch attempted to lure her into a ritual sacrifice in Ekiti State, where she was allegedly told to offer an eye or leg in exchange for wealth. Sensing danger, she refused and began to uncover the extent of the deception.
The case, first reported by SaharaReporters on February 24, 2025, includes serious allegations of forgery, fraud, intimidation, and threats to life. Oyewole alleged that the monarch bragged about his connections to cult groups and warned her not to pursue justice.
“All efforts to retrieve my assets have failed,” she said. “Instead, I face threats. He tells me that nothing can happen to him because he is a king.”
In addition to the petition to the Ogun Assembly, Oyewole has also submitted formal complaints to the Governors of Osun and Ondo States, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Ogun Council of Obas.
She appealed to the Assembly for justice, saying, “I am stranded. I believe with your intervention, I can recover my dignity and start my life afresh.”
The Ogun State House of Assembly has yet to officially respond to the petition. Efforts to reach the palace of Oba Adekeye for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
