Popular social commentator and internet personality, Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, has raised alarm over the alleged plan by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to publish his mugshot with the label “money laundering” attached—days after his release from custody.
The controversial figure, known for his fearless online activism, took to Instagram on Friday, just three days after regaining his freedom, to accuse the anti-graft agency of preparing to publicly associate him with criminal charges that, according to him, have not been proven.
"If you drop that picture with 'money laundering' on it, then we have a problem," he declared in the video post. "You will first have to prove it to the whole of Nigeria."
VeryDarkMan had been arrested following a visit to a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) branch in Abuja, where he had gone to report suspicious withdrawals from his mother’s account. His detention quickly sparked outrage on social media, with celebrities, politicians, and followers demanding his release.
In a subsequent press statement, the EFCC explained that his arrest was linked to “multiple petitions” accusing him of financial misconduct—though the petitioners remain unnamed. The commission cited ongoing investigations into “financial malfeasance.”
Following his release, his legal counsel, human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju, disclosed that the EFCC had yet to return Otse’s mobile phone and car, even though he had been granted bail.
Now, with fresh concerns over the potential release of his detention photo tagged with financial crimes, VeryDarkMan is once again on the offensive—warning that such a move could spark public legal confrontation.
“Remove the money laundering. You know I saw it and I told you I was going to talk about it.”
“You put tax evasion, no problem,” he said. “But if it’s money laundering, I’ll fight back, because that would mean all your public accusations against others are also lies.”
“Remove the money laundering. You know I saw it and I told you I was going to talk about it.”
He further suggested that while he was trying to build a cordial relationship with the agency, such an act would be “a betrayal” that could mark the beginning of a public legal showdown.
The EFCC has not issued a response to the fresh allegations as of press time.
VeryDarkMan is back — and he has a message for the EFCC and GTBank!
