VIOLENCE continued in the northern part of the country yesterday as suspected Boko Haram sect members trailed the Borno State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Zanna Mallam Gana, to his residence in Bama town and shot him dead by 7:45pm on Monday.
Also, suspected terrorists have attacked former Comptroller General of Prisons, Alhaji Ibrahim Jarma, in Azare town, headquarters of Katagum Local Council of Bauchi State, killing a warder and injuring one of his security guards.
The attack on Jarma occurred a day after unknown gunmen attacked and killed nine people in Zango, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis.
Meanwhile, the Joint Task Force (JTF) has assured Kano residents of safety from the criminal activities of the Boko Haram sect, just as the Nigerian Army commissioned its dog unit in Abuja, formally kicking off the introduction of dogs in the fight against terrorism. The Army also commissioned various offices and residential accommodations for the use of its personnel within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The Borno attorney general’s town, Bama, is 78 kilometers east of Maiduguri, the state capital. An eye witness and resident of Bama, Bana Modu, said yesterday that the gunmen came on two motorcycles at 7pm and asked for Gana’s whereabouts, chanting: “God is great.”
He continued: “They started firing into the air and we started running into our houses and shops since we didn’t know who the attackers wanted to kill.” He said about half an hour later, soldiers and policemen on patrol rushed to Gana’s house and started shooting sporadically for 15 minutes, but the gunmen fled towards unknown direction.
Confirming the incident yesterday in Maiduguri, the Borno State Police Commissioner, Yuguda Abdullahi, said the armed hoodlums suspected to be Boko Haram members attacked Gana’s residence and shot him dead. Gana was commissioner of justice during the second term of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff of the All Peoples Party (ANPP) as governor, before he was reappointed for the same position by Governor Kashim Shettima.
The Guardian learnt that the former Prisons comptroller, Jarma, just came out from the mosque after night prayer when he was shot in his arm, leg and chest by the unknown gunmen.
Some residents of the area said they heard gunshots which caused pandemonium and many people ran for safety.
Efforts to get the Bauchi State Commissioner for Police Mohammed Ladan’s reaction failed up to the time of filing this report. A top security source in the state confirmed the attack and killing. Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Hassan Mohammed Auyo said he had travelled out of the state on casual leave.
The JTF confirmed that the Sunday operation of the military men that led to the capture of two members of the sect has foiled another plan of massive attack on Kano State.
A statement issued by the JTF spokesperson Lieutenant Ikedichi Iweaha said the military encounter led to the arrest of the suspected media person of the sect. He disclosed that arms of mass destruction, including two AK 47 rifles and 80 round of 7.62 special ammunition were recovered during the operation.
Lt. Iweaha stated: “Our men were able to recover heavily wired IED hideout, the following items were recovered: two AK 47 rifles, two Pump Action Rifles, one Berretta Rifle, one Smoke Discharger, 433 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, 80 rounds of 7.62 special ammunition, 2 AK 47 magazines, 36 Prepared IEDs, and 13 Laptop computers.
“ Also in our custody are two motorcycles, four printers, one photocopier, one 33 slots Zenith Disc writer, One TG 3900Ez Generator set, Religious Books, large quantity of CD plates, Two decoders, Two Satellite dish, One 21-inch Television set, One DVD player, 2 Bags of Urea fertilizer, One Elite dry cell 12v battery, One blue gate UPS, One stabilizer, 10 Hand held Motorola radios and 5 Battery chargers”.
The JTF has also reiterated its resolve to continue to work assiduously towards the protection of lives and property in the state while attributing the relative success recorded to collective effort and prayers of the good people of Kano State.
Speaking after commissioning the Army dog unit and the building projects, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence and Army, George Sekibo, called on Nigerians to support the military as it confronts issues of terrorism in it’s internal security operations. He noted that “the professionalism, patriotism and selflessness with which our soldiers respond to internal security challenges, especially the wave of terrorism, are both reassuring and admirable.”/color]
