Scientists are no closer to finding out exactly why women have a preference for hairless men.
An earlier theory called the "ectoparasite avoidance hypothesis" had suggested that women preferred less hairy men as a way to avoid lice and other parasites which might call a pelt home, LiveScience reported.
But new research suggests that the theory may not be the correct explanation.
"According to evolutionary view, hairless men should be preferred particularly in areas (or cultures) with high parasite threat, which means close to the equator, where parasite richness is highest," study researcher Pavol Prokop, a professor of biology at Trnava University in Slovakia, wrote in an email to LiveScience.
"We compared only two countries that differ in parasite threat, but we found no differences in women's preferences," he added
In the study, 161 Turkish and 183 Slovakian women were asked to rate the attractiveness of men with hairy and hairless chests.
The men were firstly photographed from the neck to the waist with hairy chests, and then asked to shave before posing for an identical photograph.
The results found that only about 20 percent of women rated the more hairy versions of the men as more attractive.
According to Live Science some earlier studies have suggested that women's hair preferences differ by country with women in the African nation of Cameroon, for example, preferring hairier guys, while women in China, New Zealand and California went for a bare look.
In a South African survey conducted in 2007 by shaving product manufacturer, Royal Philips Electronics, it was found that SA women preferred hairless men over their hairy counterparts.
"A group of women were interviewed, and we found out that only 12 percent of South African women are attracted to men with body hair. So the hairy men really stand no chance at all," the manufacturer said.
Common sense is indeed not common.

Well I dont know about other people but as far as Nigerian Babes are concerned the Hairy Guy is the bomb. They find him irresistable especially when the hair is smooth and curly. Talking from experience.
