Revellers in the Ivory Coast city of Abidjan had been enjoying a fireworks display to welcome in the new year when tragedy struck.

As thousands of people made their way out of the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, many became caught up in a stampede in the street outside.

It is not clear what caused the crush, although some reports say the large crowd of people leaving the festivities coincided with the arrival of a group trying to enter the venue.

At least 60 people are known to have died and more than 200 were injured. Many of the victims were children.

President Alassane Ouattara visited the wounded in hospital and has pledged to investigate what caused the crush.
