Google had a major impact in the development of the Internet and the mobile market in the last 10 years and Eric Schmidt also made a significant contribution.

Eric Schmidt’s statement that the entire world will be online by the end of 2020 seems a bit over the top though, in our humble opinion.

Currently only 33% of the world’s population has access to the Internet. Being well aware of this fact, Eric Schmidt said that by 2020 the entire population of the planet will be connected.

Emerging or poor markets are seen as a potential market by many companies and they might offer them a cheap solution to be connected to the Internet.

There are countless attempts to expand the internet on emerging markets right now. Some of them, like accessible wireless connectivity sustained by GEEKS Without

Frontiers and Google and classrooms with Internet accessed powered by solar panels from Samsung are still being tested.

Others, such as mobile banking projects in Kenya or localized services through Nokia Life are already functional and successful.

However, development takes a long time and Schmidt’s statement seems very optimistic considering that many areas of the world have problems with water or food and internet access is the least of their problems.
