This is not a new story. Christmas, Esther all have pagan origin. They all were the practices in Roman empire long before the coming of Jesus Christ. When Christianity was taken to Rome, Romans could not abandon their pagan cultures and embrace it, that was why some of the major pagan rituals were transformed and infused into Christianity for Romans to accept and adapt it as a religion. I know many Christians will insult me, but, that is the truth.
In a nutshell, Romans were not Christianised but Christianity was ROMANIZED.

So since people needed something to celebrate on that day that is not idolatorous the pope decided that instead of pagan celebrattion the day will be used to celebrate the birth of Jesus. That was how Christmas was born. There is nothing idolatorous about celebrating the birth of Jesus our Saviour on the 25th of Dec. Afterall the Roman god that was celebrated previously on that day by pagans does not hold a monopoly of that date. The celebration of christmas stopped the early christians from participating in a sinful festival and it also gave them something holy to celebrate. That's what Jesus does He replaces unholy things. Happy birthday in advance Jesus.  What I am sure of is that, Christ birth was not recorded in the scripture but just as you have explained here, if Christians choose that very day to replace idol celebrations with Godly celebrations, what is wrong in that?. In 2Sam. 6:6, logically, it was a good thing Uzzah did in saving the ark of God but Biblically it was an evil thing to do, so he was struck dead.
