A pedophile and trader has been sent behind the bars for 21 years by an Ikeja High Court for defiling a six-year-old girl.
Chidi Ibiam, 27, got the jail term in a landmark judgment delivered by Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya.
Ibiam, who sold foodstuffs and resides at the Baruwa area of Ipaja, Lagos, was found guilty of defilement.
“I have noted before me all the relevant facts of this case. The defendant is hereby found guilty of the crime of defilement and is sentenced to 21 years in prison,” Justice Ogunsanya ruled.
During the trial, the prosecution, led by the state counsel, Mr. Adebayo Haroun, had told the court that Ibiam committed the offence on December 15, 2012 and was caught after the victim reported the assault to her mother.
According to the prosecution, the convict was well-known to the victim’s family being a neighbour and a church member.
The six-year-old (name withheld) had told the court that the defendant had unlawful carnal knowledge of her 12 times including in a shop and in a neighbour’s house.
“He used to give me garri (cassava flour) and money, then he would ask me to sit on his laps before he would start touching me,” the six-year-old girl told the court.
The victim referred to Ibiam’s genitals as ‘tom tom’ throughout her testimony.
A medic and prosecution witness from Orile-Agege General Hospital, Dr. Adefunke Adeoye, also told the court that when she conducted a honeypotl examination on the victim, she found evidence of segxwal assault and broken hymen.
Delivering her judgment, Justice Ogunsanya admonished parents to start teaching their children the rightful names of male and female genitals.
