Feyenoord vs Manchester City Wednesday, September 13 19:45 (WAT)
Feyenoord are one of the more well known names in football, but it’s been 15 years since they were last in this position. That was their most recent Champions League group appearance, earned after they ended almost two decades without an Eredivisie title last season.
The Dutch side haven’t been afforded the absolute most difficult group in the competition, but they couldn’t have been given a much tougher opening fixture as they host Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
Feyenoord have started their title defence in good fashion though, winning all four of their Eredivisie games after lifting the Dutch Super Cup at the start of August. They have scored 12 goals in their four league games so far, so the scoring potential is definitely present.
Manchester City are no slouches in front of goal though. The visitors showed no mercy to the ten men of Liverpool on Saturday, hammering them 5-0 courtesy of a Sergio Aguero opener and braces from Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane.
It’s the former of those two braces that interest us. Gabriel Jesus has netted three goals this season and has now scored ten goals in just 14 Manchester City appearances. The young Brazilian seems to be getting better with every week that passes, so backing him to score anytime looks a good option.
The Citizens have won three of their four league games so far this season, only faltering at home to Everton but boosting their confidence enormously on Saturday. Defensively there are major questions that need answering, but going forward they look absolutely lethal.
This propensity for high scoring games extends to the Champions League too. There were a huge 40 goals scored in the ten Champions League matches they played last season, with them scoring in nine of those games and conceding in seven of them. There were at least three goals in seven of them, and given Feyenoord’s attacking outlet we could be in for another goal-fest here.
The hosts have seen at least three goals in eight of their last 12 competitive games, scoring in all but one of them but only keeping a clean sheet in five of them. Those clean sheets came against much weaker opposition too, so backing Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score at 21/20 looks a good choice.
Manchester City scored at least three goals in five of their ten Champions League games last season too, so we’re also going for Manchester City Over 2.5 Team Goals at 5/4 alongside a 3-1 correct score predictions at 10/1.
