The Progressive People Alliance (PPA) has warned President Goodluck Jonathan against relying on advice from former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
According to a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ben Onyechere, the party expressed concern that Obasanjo had an undue hold over the nation’s presidency since, according to the statement, it appeared that the president always consulted him. “In view of Obasanjo’s antecedents, it has become necessary to warn the President to be careful the way he listens to Obasanjo because it is already evident that Obasanjo has a hold on the government of Jonathan.
“Obasanjo will certainly deny Jonathan at some point the way he denied Yar’Adua while pretending to support a Jonathan Presidency. The hurry in withdrawing the suit against Ribadu smacks of dishonour for Yar’Adua and weakness on the side of Jonathan,” the statement said.
According to the party, Jonathan’s government could take a step forward by probing Obasanjo for corrupt practices, insisting that international community could only respect the new anti-corruption crusade if the former leader was brought under searchlight.
The statement expressed public fear that the presidency might have been relying on consultations with the ex-president on sensitive appointments while noting that the fact that the president was nominated by ex-president Obasanjo as Vice President could not be enough justification for relying on him. However, the party warned that should Jonathan fail to heed the warning, he would have nobody to blame. “Jonathan has a choice to do whatever Obasanjo says at his own peril,” the statement said.
