Speaking with The Nation in separate interviews, human rights activist and constitutional lawyer, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, and a Labour Party leader in Ondo State, Olufemi Adekanmbi, said Friday’s judgment showed that Adebayo erred during the conduct of the election.
Adebayo who is currently the Resident Electoral Commissioner of Ondo State, had declared Oni winner of the re-run election in controversial circumstances.
Abayomi said it was shocking that Adebayo did not declare Fayemi winner. “Fayemi’s victory at the Appellate is a clear victory against tyranny of power and clear demonstration of rule of law.
The verdict is a terrible embarrassment for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); it is now clear that Ayoka Adebayo was forced to declare the wrong winner during the re-run election in Ekiti”.
According to Adekanmbi, “INEC needs to brace up ahead of the 2011 general elections. It was evident in the judgement delivered that INEC messed up the re-run election in Ekiti State.
The commission must ensure that credible elections are conducted in 2011”.
Stakeholders in Ondo State had, before now, called for the removal of Adebayo as the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ondo State.
