The Ogun State Government has denied spending monthly allocations belonging to the local governments in the state.

It was reported that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had on different occasions accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of diverting funds meant for the local councils.

But, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Afolabi Afuape, said the Gov Dapo Abiodun government had spent over N2 billion to augment local government allocations in the last six months.

This, he said, was contrary to the rumour that the State Government had been using the council funds to its advantage.

Speaking during the June 2021 Joint Account Allocation Committee meeting (JAAC) at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Wednesday, Afuape explained that the Abiodun government operates an open system, saying it would not hide the facts from Ogun indigenes.

Afuape added that the monthly JAAC meeting usually has in attendance, stakeholders like Local Government Chairmen, representatives of pensioners, NULGE, traditional rulers and the State Government.

This, according to him, will correct the impression that it is the State Government that is spending council’s funds, saying stakeholders will be able to see what comes to each LG and how it was disbursed.

He said, “apart from the augmentation, the State Government had also at two different occasions given grants to the Local Governments to execute people-oriented projects.”
