About 11 members of the strife -torn Oyo State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), have been hospitalised for gunshot injuries. They sustained the injury during an invasion of the union’s Secretariat at Olomi, Ibadan, yesterday, allegedly by the Alhaji Lateef Salako a.k.a. Eleweomo-led faction.
Daily Sun learnt that the invaders besieged the union secretariat around 6.15 a.m. in a convoy of about 35 buses and cars, shooting sporadically and in the process wounding 11 loyalists of the reinstated Chairman of the union, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola a.k.a. Tokyo.
The attackers were allegedly escorted to the secretariat by a team of policemen in a ‘Hilux Pick Up van marked Idi Aro Police Division’.
Briefing reporters on the incident, the State Secretary of the NURTW, Comrade Lekan Aleshinloye said the invasion lasted almost one hour, accusing the state government of sponsoring the latest mayhem like it allegedly did in the past.
Although he said his group had already lodged a complaint on the latest attack at the Sanyo Police Station which has jurisdiction over the area, the NURTW scribe said the Elewe omo group and its sponsors were pushing his group to the wall declaring that: “Any other attack after this one will not go unchallenged. We will go all out into the city. Akala is calling for anarchy and he will surely get it. We will give it to him as we cannot continue to die in silence.”
Aleshinloye alleged that his men recognised some of the invaders to include some die-hard henchmen of Elewomo, whose aliases he gave as: “Killer”; “Ese”; “Eje Oto”; “Idi Amin”and “Aro”.
But, Alhaji Salako, in an interview with Daily Sun denied the charge. Salako, who said he was speaking from Lagos , where he said he had gone to visit some family members said: “There was nothing like that. What I heard was that it was Tokyo ’s men that went to attack some Ibadan South West Local Government Park Managers working across the street with a view to chasing them away from collecting dues. I even learnt they burnt two of their vehicles and that’s why the police were posted there”.
The NURTW factional Chief said Tokyo ’s group was merely crying wolf and looking for an excuse to disturb the peace of the city.
The state police commissioner, Bolanta, confirmed the incident to Daily Sun on phone. He, however, denied allegation that the hoodlums were led by the police. “That cannot be true. The Idi Aro police Division does not have a patrol van, so, the man is lying. These people just like to lie and cause trouble. Anyway, we are going to invite him to come and substantiate his allegation. It is not enough to just allege, You must prove,” Bolanta said.
He said no arrest was made.
