Six persons, including a pregnant woman, were confirmed dead in a fire incident that occurred in the early hours of Friday at the outskirts of Maiduguri town. Tragedy struck when a local incense burner in a sitting room within the house fell and the incense, which was already burning, fell on the carpet.
It was gathered that the carpet caught fire and it spread to other rooms including the one where a pregnant woman and her five children slept.
The incident happened at Ruwan Safi, located at the outskirts of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. It was learnt that the 30-year-old woman, identified as Hajia Aisha Dungus, put the incense known in local parlance as ‘Turare wuta’ in the living room before going to bed with her children. The names of the five children were given as Umu, Fatima, Hauwa, Baba Yunus and Alhaji Bura.
According to the elder brother to the husband of the deceased woman, Jubril Yunusa, the fire started around 12:30 a.m., and engulfed six rooms in the compound.
“It happened around 12:30 midnight when we were all asleep and we tried to save them. But before we could break the iron on the door, the fire had already engulfed the entire living room and spread to other rooms. We could not go in to save them again and six of them were all burnt to death in the fire.”
The pregnant woman and her five children have since been buried according to Islamic right.
