Chairman of the House of Representatives committee on justice, Henry Dickson, has called for the review of powers given to the Nigerian president to hire and fire the Inspector-General of Police.

He said a situation where the president appoints and removes the Inspector General of Police as he likes is not good for the nation’s democracy.

Mr. Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa), who led other members to the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, Bello Adoke, to monitor the implementation of the 2010 budget of the ministry of justice, said the power given to the president to hire and fire the Inspector-General of Police should be reviewed.

He also called for the creation of state police, stressing that most states maintain the police in their states.

“The structure of the police should be made to work. The state should be empowered to manage the police. I think we should look at the various laws that will make us de-centralise the police. The appointment of the IGP should not be solely left for the president,” he said.

Mr. Dickson also called for the merger of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. He said this will enable government to save public funds and also avoid duplicating the roles of the two agencies..

He commended Mr. Adoke for the way he has conducted himself since his appointment as the AGF.
