President Goodluck Jonathan wants God to take control of the 2011 polls as he pleaded with Christians to pray for the peaceful conduct of the elections.

Addressing a mammoth crowd of worshippers at the grand finale of the Holy Ghost Congress of the Redeemed Christian Church of God on Friday night, Jonathan said that he accompanied the late President Umaru Yar’Adua to see the General Overseer of the Church, Pastor Enoch Adeboye just before the 2007  elections.

According to him, “Pastor Adeboye prayed for us and all the things he told us then had come to pass. I thank God for using Pastor Adeboye to solve the problems of Nigeria.”

The president, who was accompanied by a handful of his cabinet members, took the microphone at about11:55 p.m., immediately appreciated the efforts of  Christians in praying for the peace of the nation.

He  used the platform to call on Nigerians for more prayers for the peaceful conduct of next year’s general elections, stressing that Nigerians should pray extensively for God’s own leader to emerge and not those who will impose themselves on the nation.

Jonathan, who likened himself to the Biblical David who became king of Israel from obscurity without any form of struggle, acknowledged the finger of God in all that he had accomplished thus far, vowing therefore that he won’t do anything outside the will of God.

“I never expected and never struggled for the position of presidency, but God, in His infinite mercy, made me the deputy governor to governor, vice president and eventfully a president. It is not my efforts but that of God. Therefore, anything I need to do, I do it in the fear of God.”

He therefore urged Christians to continue to partner with the government because “your constant prayers have been the sustaining power behind the modest achievements we have made thus far.’‘

Continuing, Jonathan said Nigerians should not relent in their prayers for his administration for them to do God’s will.

He  pledged his government’s commitment to the improvement of the power sector before June next year, education as well as the infrastructure, pointing out: “we cannot woo investors in to the country when there is no power supply. No investor will bring his money into an economy where there is no peace.”

Which is why, he enjoined the Christian community to pray against social crimes in the Nigerian society, adding that his government had perfected plans to flush out any vestiges of violent crimes across the country.

“We are facing a lot of challenges like kidnapping in the nation, religious uprisings in different parts of the country, but I am assuring you that by the middle of 2011, kidnapping will become a thing of the past.

“For Nigeria to develop, kidnapping must be eradicated. Once  kidnapping is wiped out of the Nigerian system, the atmosphere will be conducive for investors to come into the country and Nigeria will develop like other developed countries.”

Responding, Adeboye, who was dressed in a green trouser and a white short sleeved shirt with a green bow tie to match, said he would not hesitate to lead the campaign against electoral malpractice during the forthcoming general elections.

He assured the president of their constant prayers for him and the nation, because “I am a Nigerian and I love Nigeria so much. I have said it before and I will repeat here: Christians must go out to register during the voter fair  registration exercise, you must vote and be prepared to defend your vote.”

Continuing, the General Overseer  urged the Independent National Electoral Commission  (INEC) to endeavour to give Nigeria free, fair and credible elections next year.

“INEC, we love you but I must say it here that there should be no magomago this time around because if there is any magomago, I promise you that I will personally lead the protest. Give us a free and fair election, whatever the results, give us free and fair election. It will be well with Nigeria.”

Other dignitaries at the Friday service include the Ekiti State governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Delta State deputy governor, Pastor Sam Obi, First Lady of Benue State, Mrs. Yemisi Suswan, First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Sarah Sosan, Deputy Governor of Osun State, Otunba Titilayo Tomori, and a host of others.
