The corps members, numbering about 76 and covering the 36 registration units in Akure South Local Government Area, abandoned the Direct Data machines at where they were kept at the Sacred Heart Primary School centre on Ondo Road, Akure.
When our correspondent visited the place around 1pm on Wednesday the machines were seen kept idle in the centre.
Investigations revealed that the corps members had mobilised themselves to the centre as early as 8am and agreed among themselves not to work unless their training, transport and feeding allowances, since the exercise began on Saturday, were fully paid.
They converted some of the classrooms into temporary bedrooms as they spread their uniforms on the pupils’ desks and slept off.
They also ensured that none of the DDC machines was taken out of the centres as they gathered in groups to discuss the unfortunate development.
The Commander of the zone F of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Alhaji Modu Bunu, who was visiting registration units in Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo, Osun and Oyo states, Alhaji Modu Bunu, expressed surprise at the action of the corps members.
A spokesperson of the corps members, Mr. Udochukwu Akpuh, told the zonal commander that his colleagues had exhausted all the money they had for transportation to and from the registration centres.
He lamented that officials of the INEC in charge of the Akure South Local Government failed to pay their allowances despite the fact that their colleagues in other local government councils had been paid.
Akpuh said his colleagues would not resume the registration exercise until all their allowances were paid.
Bunu appealed to the corps members to handle the matter with care as his discussions with the Resident Electoral Commissioners in states so far visited by him showed that INEC was having problems with its electronic payment system.
However, the Registration Area Officer in charge of the coalition centre, Mr. Adesola Ogunkanmi, who drove in while the NSCDC boss was still addressing the corps members, described the plights of the corps members as pathetic but informed them that he had been able to get some money from the INEC state office to pay part of their allowances.
The corps members promised to resume work on Thursday (today) once their money had been paid.
