Super Eagles vice-captain, William Troost-Ekong, underwent successful surgery in Finland on Tuesday night. The surgery was necessitated by a hamstring injury sustained during Nigeria's second game against hosts, Cote d'Ivoire, at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite the injury, Troost-Ekong demonstrated resilience by playing six out of Super Eagles' seven games in Cote d'Ivoire. His contributions were instrumental in Nigeria's second-place finish at the competition, during which he scored three goals.
Troost-Ekong's exceptional performance earned him the Player of the Tournament award, solidifying his status as one of Nigeria's key players. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the highest-scoring defender in the history of the AFCON.
Following the successful surgery, Troost-Ekong is expected to focus on his recovery and rehabilitation. While he is anticipated to return to action towards the end of the season, his absence will undoubtedly be felt by both the Super Eagles and his club.
