The Sokoto State government has reached out to the federal government for assistance following a mysterious illness that has led to the deaths of three children in the Isa local government area of the state.
Deputy Governor Engineer Idris Gobir made the appeal while hosting the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, and the Chief Executive Officer of Global Alliance Vaccine Initiative (GAVI), Dr. Sania Nishtar, over the weekend.
Gobir disclosed that 127 children had already been infected, prompting the state government to dispatch a team of experts to investigate the outbreak.
"We seek the intervention of the federal government to prevent the further spread of the disease," he emphasized.
Highlighting the state's commitment to healthcare improvement, Gobir pledged to enhance immunization coverage and bolster services at primary healthcare centers across Sokoto.
Acknowledging the challenges inherited from previous administrations, he assured that concerted efforts were underway to reverse the narrative and implement federal government programs on polio eradication.
Dr. Larai Aliyu Tambuwal, Executive Secretary of the Sokoto State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, confirmed the tragic loss of three children due to the outbreak.
Professor Ali Pate stressed the need for collaborative efforts to enhance immunization activities in Sokoto, soliciting further support from stakeholders.
Dr. Sania Nishtar emphasized their visit to engage stakeholders and devise strategies to enhance immunization coverage in the state, underscoring the importance of collective action to address public health challenges.
