A 32-year-old woman, Rahmat Abdulateef, has been remanded by an Abeokuta Magistrates Court for allegedly staging her own kidnapping to extort money from her husband.
The court did not take Abdulateef's plea during the hearing. She faces a one-count charge of self-kidnapping.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Adekunle Opayemi, informed the court that Abdulateef orchestrated her own abduction on June 20 at approximately 2:42 p.m. on Elite Road in Abeokuta. The scheme was designed to extract money from her husband, Mr. Ogunbummi Lateef.
The charge against Abdulateef is based on Section 27 of the Prohibition of Forcible Occupation of Landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Cultism, and Other Anti-Violence and Related Offence Laws of Ogun State, enacted in 2016.
Magistrate O.O. Odumosun ordered that Abdulateef be remanded in prison for 60 days while awaiting legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP). The case has been adjourned until September 19 for further mention.
