Dabiet Gilbert, an employee of the Nigerian Immigration Service, has been sentenced to one year in prison by a Gombe State High Court for his involvement in a job scam.
Gilbert was convicted of defrauding Akoh Accoustic out of N800,000, under the pretense of securing a job placement with the Nigerian Correctional Services.
According to the court charge, “On or about 28th May 2021 in Gombe, Gombe State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable court, with intent to defraud, Dabiet Gilbert obtained the sum of N800,000.00 from Akoh Daniel Accoustic by falsely representing that the said sum was for job placement with the Nigerian Correctional Services, which pretence he knew to be false, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 320 and punishable under Section 322 of the Penal Code Law.”
Upon his arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Gilbert pleaded guilty to the charge of fraud.
The EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, in a statement on Friday, noted, “Gilbert pleaded guilty to the charge, leading prosecution counsel, A.M. Labaran, to request the court to convict and sentence him accordingly. The defence counsel, Yusuf Ali, pleaded for leniency, urging the court to temper justice with mercy.”
Justice H.H. Kereng subsequently sentenced Gilbert to one-year imprisonment, with an option of a N60,000 fine.
Oyewale explained that Gilbert's legal troubles began after his victim petitioned the EFCC, realizing that he had been duped out of money for a non-existent Nigerian Correctional Service job. Despite efforts to recover his funds, Accoustic's attempts proved futile, prompting legal action.
