In a disturbing case of alleged child neglect and abuse, a Nigerian couple, Mr. Uche and Mrs. Peace Mbonu, has been apprehended by security operatives in Osumenyi community, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The arrest, which occurred following reports of maltreatment, starvation, and denial of basic necessities to their five underage sons, was facilitated by local security officials before the couple was handed over to the police. The handover was coordinated through the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo.
Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, media aide to the commissioner, disclosed the details on Saturday, June 29, stating, "The couple stands accused of subjecting their children to severe starvation and neglect. They have denied these allegations, attributing the children's malnutrition to their habit of consuming raw rice, which allegedly infuriates the parents."
According to the statement, the eldest son, Chigbo Mbonu, aged 17, shed light on their living conditions, revealing, "Peace Mbonu, my father's third wife, has introduced untold hardship since joining our family. We often go days with just one meal, and resort to raw rice and palm kernels when hunger intensifies."
Chigbo Mbonu further explained that he had discontinued his education to assist his father in a block industry, where he performs strenuous labor under difficult conditions.
Commissioner Ify Obinabo, following a physical examination that revealed signs of severe malnutrition among the children, strongly condemned the couple's actions. "The state government remains committed to combating child labor, abuse, and all forms of maltreatment," she affirmed.
Further investigation by security operatives indicated that after Mr. Uche Mbonu was apprehended, Mrs. Peace Mbonu attempted to evade capture by seeking refuge in Nnewi, her maternal hometown, before eventually being apprehended as well.
The couple has been handed over to the police for thorough investigation, after which appropriate legal actions will be taken against them in accordance with the law.
