Akure, Ondo State - In a tense confrontation over the weekend, operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as the Amotekun Corps, clashed with suspected herdsmen in Sango, Igoba, Akure, the state capital. The incident erupted as the Amotekun Corps enforced the state's anti-open grazing law.

The altercation began when Amotekun operatives responded to a distress call from local farmers whose farmlands were reportedly being ravaged by cattle. The operatives discovered over 120 cows on the farms without any herders in sight.

As the Amotekun officers moved the cows out of the farms and passed through the Sango Area, they were ambushed by armed herdsmen wielding stones, bottles, cutlasses, and guns. The ensuing violent clash halted vehicular movement for hours along the Ado-Akure road, with some Amotekun operatives brutally injured in the attack.

Jimoh Adeniken, Public Relations Officer of the Amotekun Corps, confirmed the incident and praised the operatives' courage and determination in de-escalating the volatile situation. "During the operation, the corps surveillance team was led to the farms by the owners. On getting there, they met over one hundred and twenty cows ravaging the farms, and there was nobody with the cows," Adeniken explained.

He further detailed the confrontation, stating, "Determined to enforce the anti-open grazing law of the state, the operatives of the Amotekun corps moved the cows out of the farms. While passing by the Sango Area, at Igoba, along Ado Road in Akure, groups of armed Fulani herdsmen attacked the officers with stones, bottles, cutlasses, and guns."

Despite the violent assault, the Amotekun officers managed to retreat under orders from their state headquarters. However, the herdsmen continued their attack, throwing stones and bottles, and ultimately invading the main road. During the chaos, one Amotekun officer was severely injured and left in a coma.

To dislodge the attackers and retreat safely, the Amotekun officers fired shots into the air, successfully making their way back to their office.

The anti-open grazing law, signed by the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on August 13, 2021, prohibits the open grazing of animals across Ondo State. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges and tensions surrounding the enforcement of this law in the region.

Our people are so scared of fighting back. I asked my people if there are plants that cows will avoid eating. If we have those crops, then plant them around the perimeters of the farms.  If these crops exist, we do not need to keep calling on government or God to save us. God has given everybody the intelligence and acts for survival.
