Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun State Command, have apprehended a syndicate specializing in mobile phone theft and defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.
The suspects, arrested at different locations in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, include 35-year-old Kayode Owoseni, a two-time ex-convict from Agbode Street, Oke Baale; 43-year-old Olasunkanmi Adesina, a suspected cultist from Oke-Ayepe; and 32-year-old Kehinde Bankole, a resident of Idi-Omo, Sabo Road.
Speaking with journalists on Sunday, NSCDC Commandant Michael Adaralewa detailed the arrest, which followed a complaint from a victim whose phone was stolen.
“The complainant reported that on June 14, 2024, two men entered her shop in Inisa, Osun State, pretending to buy sachet water. While attending to them, she placed her phone on a table. After deciding not to purchase anything, they left, and she discovered her phone was missing,” Adaralewa explained.
The command acted swiftly, resulting in the arrest of the syndicate members on July 1, 2024. Adaralewa noted that Kayode Owoseni had been previously convicted twice for similar offenses. The suspects face charges of stealing, impersonation, fraud, and conspiracy.
Adaralewa assured the public that the suspects would face the full wrath of the law and warned criminally minded individuals in the state to desist from their activities or face severe consequences.
In his confession, Owoseni admitted to learning pickpocketing from friends, operating primarily at Oja-Oba, Osogbo. Adesina, another syndicate member, revealed his affiliation with a cult group known as ‘Eta Fraternity.’
Adesina confessed to selling the stolen phones and using the SIM cards to deceive unsuspecting individuals by pretending to be an herbalist offering money rituals. Victims, believing the ruse, sent money for sacrifices, after which Adesina destroyed the SIM cards to eliminate evidence.
The syndicate, in collaboration with an accomplice known as ‘JEEGUN,’ had been defrauding the public for fifteen years. The NSCDC continues its efforts to bring such criminals to justice and protect the citizens of Osun State.
