he Lagos Border Patrol Command of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has thwarted a human trafficking attempt, intercepting a six-month-old baby and three adults suspected of being trafficked. The group was apprehended along Kankon Owode Road in Badagry on Monday, July 22, at approximately 1:30 PM.
Comptroller Peter Adache, who oversees the Seme Command, reported that the victims, including the infant, were being transported to Burkina Faso via the Republic of Benin without the necessary travel documents.
The suspected traffickers, a couple—one of whom is a food vendor from Burkina Faso—had promised the victims employment opportunities and good salaries in Burkina Faso. The traffickers had arranged the journey and covered all associated expenses, including travel and sustenance for all six individuals.
During questioning, it was revealed that the couple had enticed the victims with promises of better job prospects. The victims included a mother of the six-month-old baby, who explained that she was abandoned by her husband and had been left with no support, leading her to agree to the traffickers' offer in a bid to improve her situation.
“The Lagos Border Patrol Command remains committed to enforcing immigration laws and protecting Nigerian citizens,” Comptroller Adache stated. “In line with directives from the Assistant Controller General of Immigration for Zone A, we will hand over the victims to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further assistance and family reunification.”
The victims were transferred to Ibraheem Ogunbiyi, Assistant Director and Head of the Counseling and Rehabilitation Unit at NAPTIP’s Lagos Zonal Command, for ongoing support and integration back into their communities.
