The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has announced the arrest of a couple in Akwa Ibom for allegedly defrauding thousands of Nigerians out of millions of naira through an employment scam.
Speaking to the press on Saturday at the NSCDC headquarters in Uyo, the State Commandant, Mr. Eluyemi Eluwade, detailed the operation that led to the couple's arrest on July 22. The arrest took place along IBB Avenue in Uyo following numerous public complaints about the couple's fraudulent activities.
The suspects, identified as Blessing Ezekiel, 27, and her husband Joseph Ufot, 46, allegedly promised to secure employment for their victims within the state civil service in exchange for substantial sums of money.
Eluwade explained, "The suspects collected money from various individuals with the promise of securing them jobs. Ezekiel also operated a fake NGO, Child Support Foundation, purportedly sponsored by UNICEF, through which she registered about 7,000 children at N1,000 each for a supposed UNICEF children’s grant, which was a scam."
The Commandant revealed that Ezekiel claimed to be the personal assistant to a fictitious Dr. Helen Akpan, allegedly a Senior Special Assistant to the Akwa Ibom Governor on Special Duties. She reportedly issued fraudulent employment letters to hundreds of unsuspecting victims who paid N4,800, only to receive no salaries for months, leading to suspicions of a scam.
Eluwade condemned the criminal act of defrauding unsuspecting citizens, especially during tough economic times. He urged job seekers to remain vigilant against employment scams, reminding the public that recruitment into any organization in Nigeria, whether government or private, is free of charge.
He advised individuals seeking employment to verify recruitment claims by visiting official government offices or checking the websites of the concerned organizations, warning that any demand for payment should be considered a red flag.
The Commandant assured victims that the suspects would be prosecuted in court once investigations are completed.
