The Lagos State Police have arrested five individuals in connection with a child trafficking ring, successfully rescuing a two-month-old baby who had been sold multiple times.
The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, announced the arrests on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, detailing how detectives from the Oko-oba Division uncovered the operation. The investigation was launched after the mother of the missing child reported that her baby had been taken by a woman named Gloria Sunday on July 11, 2024.
Following a tip-off, detectives arrested Gloria Sunday, who confessed to selling the baby for ₦500,000 to Pastor Peter Udoh. The investigation then led police to Ikene Town in Ogun State, where Pastor Udoh admitted to reselling the child for ₦1,450,000 to Loretta Nelson, who was later apprehended in Festac Town, Lagos. Nelson confessed to selling the baby for ₦2,350,000.
The police traced the baby to the final buyers, Mr. and Mrs. James Uwam, who were arrested during a naming ceremony for the child.
All suspects are in custody and will face charges in court following the conclusion of the investigation. The police have assured the public of their commitment to combating child trafficking and ensuring the safety of all children in the state.
