In a significant crackdown on illegal oil activities, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder has uncovered a private residence converted into an illicit refining site in Okwuzi community, Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area, Rivers State.
The operation, led by Commodore Desmond Igbo, commander of NNS Pathfinder, resulted in the seizure of over 200,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel. Two suspects were apprehended during the raid.
Commodore Igbo briefed journalists at the site on Friday, highlighting that the discovery was part of a broader initiative under the Chief of Naval Staff's mandate to combat crude oil theft and related criminal activities in the Niger Delta. He credited the breakthrough to dedicated intelligence efforts.
“The volume of illegally refined products here is massive," said Commodore Igbo, describing the scene. "We found some of the diesel bagged in sacks, some stored in drums, and over 62 tanks filled with the product."
The seized diesel is believed to have been refined from crude oil siphoned from pipelines. Commodore Igbo stated that the suspects would be handed over to relevant prosecuting agencies and the compound would be sealed.
He also issued a stern warning to the youth in the region, urging them not to be used as tools to undermine the nation's economy through illegal activities.
