The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the arrest of a 50-year-old Spain-based businessman, Francis Akajiobi, at the departure hall of Terminal 2, Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos. Akajiobi was apprehended after 1.20 kilograms of cocaine were discovered concealed in his sandals as he attempted to board a Royal Air Maroc flight to Madrid, Spain.
According to a statement released by Femi Babafemi, NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, the arrest took place on Thursday, July 25, 2024. The agency's operatives intercepted Akajiobi when they found two parcels of cocaine hidden in the soles of his black sandals.
During a preliminary interview, Akajiobi revealed that the consignment had been handed to him at a bar in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He claimed that he was to deliver the drugs to a friend and neighbor in Spain, for which he was promised a fee of five thousand euros (€5,000).
The NDLEA has reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring that Nigeria’s airports remain secure from such illegal activities. Further investigations are ongoing.
