Tragedy struck on Sunday when a boat carrying over 40 passengers capsized in the Dundaye River, located in Wamakko Local Government Area of Sokoto State, leaving at least 25 passengers missing. The boat was reportedly ferrying mostly women and children to their farms across the river when the incident occurred.

According to an eyewitness, Malam Ayuba Maya Dundaye, the boat sank as it reached the middle of the river. Villagers quickly sprang into action, with local swimmers managing to rescue 15 passengers. However, 25 others remain unaccounted for as rescue efforts continue.

"The canoe sank in the middle of the river," Ayuba recounted. "We were able to rescue 15 passengers, but 25 are still missing. Efforts are ongoing to locate them."

Despite the severity of the situation, Ayuba noted that only a representative of the District Head had visited the scene to support the rescue efforts.

When contacted, the Special Adviser to the Sokoto State Governor on the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Nasir Garba Kalambaina, said he was initially unaware of the incident but quickly mobilized a rescue team and notified the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). NEMA officials were dispatched to the scene to assist in the rescue operation.

Kalambaina expressed hope that the missing passengers would be found and assured that his team would do everything possible to ensure their rescue.

The mishap is believed to have been caused by the river's overflow, highlighting the dangers faced by residents who rely on these waterways for transportation. As the search continues, the community remains on edge, hoping for the safe return of their loved ones.
