A 29-year-old man, Tobiloba Ogunbo, has been sentenced to seven years in a correctional facility after being convicted of secret cult membership by the Ogun Special Cultism Court in Abeokuta on Friday.
Ogunbo, who pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, membership in an unlawful society, and public disturbance, was found guilty by Magistrate O. L. Oke. The magistrate ruled that the prosecution had presented irrefutable evidence, proving the defendant's involvement in the crimes.
During the trial, the prosecutor, Inspector Olaide Rawlings, told the court that the incident occurred on January 19 in the Sabo area of Abeokuta. Ogunbo and other members of the Eiye Confraternity allegedly engaged in a violent altercation, leaving one man, Mr. Anu, injured.
Following an investigation, Ogunbo was arrested and confessed to being a member of the notorious cult group.
Magistrate Oke, emphasizing the seriousness of the offences, sentenced Ogunbo to seven years in a correctional centre without the option of a fine. The court noted that the offences violated the Ogun State Secret Cults Prohibition and Special Provisions Law of 2016.
This sentencing highlights the state’s strict stance against cult-related activities and its commitment to curbing such criminal behavior in the region.
