Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has raised the boarding fees for public schools in Lagos State from N35,000 to N100,000 per term, marking a nearly 300% increase. This development comes as families continue to grapple with the rising cost of living across the country.
The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education issued a circular instructing all public boarding school principals to enforce the new fee structure for the upcoming 2024/2025 academic session. Signed by Olufemi Asaolu, the Director of Basic Education Services on behalf of the permanent secretary, the directive emphasizes that no additional fees beyond the N100,000 will be allowed.
“I have the directive of the Honourable Commissioner to inform all public boarding house schools in Lagos State that the state government has approved the review of the boarding fee payable in all public boarding house schools,” the circular stated. It also reaffirmed that the resumption date for public schools remains September 15, 2024.
The sharp fee increase has sparked concerns among parents, many of whom are already struggling with rising prices of school supplies and educational materials ahead of the new school year. As the cost of goods and services continues to climb, the new policy is expected to put additional pressure on families, particularly those with children in boarding schools.
While the government has yet to provide further justification for the fee hike, the move has drawn mixed reactions, with some questioning its timing amid ongoing economic hardship across Nigeria.
