In a tragic display of ongoing cult violence, a man identified as Nonso was killed on Friday afternoon in Awka, the capital of Anambra State. Nonso’s death marks the latest in a series of losses for his family, with both his brothers previously killed in cult-related attacks, leaving their mother without any surviving children.
The attack on Nonso occurred in broad daylight near Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (commonly known as Amaku), according to sources. A close family member revealed that Nonso’s murder is believed to be linked to the recent killing of his younger brother, Buchi, who was slain three months ago near MacDon Eatery. The family’s eldest brother had also fallen victim to a brutal attack attributed to cultist violence, compounding the heartbreak endured by their mother.
The incident comes amid an alarming surge of cult-related killings in Awka, with at least 16 lives recently lost in Nibo and seven more in Ifite Awka. Despite assurances from law enforcement, the violence remains unchecked, raising concerns about the effectiveness of local security measures.
Anambra State Police Commissioner Nnaghe Obono Itam condemned Nonso’s murder and vowed that law enforcement would conduct a comprehensive investigation. “We will leave no stone unturned in apprehending the perpetrators and bringing them to justice,” Itam assured.
Meanwhile, the Ezinano Awka Community, led by Ozo Jeff Nweke, has taken an extraordinary measure by placing a N10 million bounty on those responsible for what has become known as the Nibo Massacre. Nweke has issued a stern warning to cultists to avoid Awka and surrounding areas, underscoring the community’s determination to end the violence plaguing the region.
