A 25-year-old suspected motorcycle thief, identified as Hassan Abdul, was apprehended by the Kogi State Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) on Saturday after allegedly attempting to steal a motorcycle at GSM Village in Lokoja. Abdul, who had been wanted for several months, is believed to be part of a syndicate specializing in motorcycle theft in the state.
During the parade of the suspect, Lokoja VGN Commander Hassan Yusuf disclosed that Abdul is affiliated with a gang based in Ayingba, Dekina Local Government Area, known for its involvement in motorcycle theft. Abdul confessed to his crimes, admitting his method involved using a master key to steal motorcycles from locations across Lokoja, including Computer Village, banks, and the Old Market.
"My name is Hassan Abdul. I am 25 years old, from the Igala tribe, and I operate out of Ayingba," he told journalists. "I used a master key to steal motorcycles and sold them to an individual named Kabiru, who lives near Our Ladies in Ayingba. My partner, Ogbe, was also involved before his arrest, and he is currently held at Koton Karfe Correctional Centre."
Salihu Abubakar, chairman of the Kogi State Association of Phone Technicians and Accessories Dealers, commended the VGN for their swift action in capturing the suspect. Abubakar urged the public to remain vigilant, noting that alertness and cooperation with local authorities are crucial for maintaining a safe business environment.
He further called on authorities to ensure all individuals involved in criminal activities face justice, specifically describing Abdul as a "notorious motorcycle snatcher" who had disturbed the peace of the local community.
