The Enugu State Police Command has successfully disbanded an interstate criminal syndicate notorious for armed robbery and financial fraud, arresting eight suspects and recovering a cache of stolen items and firearms.
In a statement released on Saturday, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the Police Public Relations Officer for Enugu State, revealed that the operation involved coordinated efforts by the Emene Division, Crack and Octopus Tactical Squads, and the Neighbourhood Watch Group.
The suspects, identified as Ismaila Isah (23), Sadik Ahmed (28, a dismissed soldier), Abbas Usman (33), Mubarak Garba (24), Abubakar Haruna (23), Abubakar Sani (32), Obiri Chukwuebuka (22), and Bright Omeniru (22), were apprehended in separate locations spanning Enugu and Imo states.
Recovered items include two locally made pistols, one loaded with live ammunition, N300,450 in cash, ten laptops, land documents, ten mobile phones, assorted jewellery and watches, power banks, and other personal belongings.
The operation commenced on November 12, 2024, following a distress call about an armed robbery in an estate in Emene. Police operatives arrested the first suspect, Ismaila Isah, at the scene with a pistol, stolen cash, and other valuables. His arrest led to a trail of investigations and further operations.
“Ismaila's confessions directed the police to the hideouts of other gang members in New Garriki, Awkunanaw, Enugu, where additional firearms and stolen items were recovered,” DSP Ndukwe stated.
In a parallel operation, the Octopus Tactical Squad arrested Obiri Chukwuebuka and Bright Omeniru in Owerri, Imo State, based on intelligence reports. The duo admitted to using stolen phones to withdraw funds fraudulently from victims' bank accounts.
Investigations revealed the syndicate had orchestrated multiple robberies within Enugu and sold stolen items in Imo and other states. Ahmed, a dismissed soldier, reportedly leveraged his military background to evade security checkpoints while transporting stolen goods.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, praised the operatives for their decisive action and urged them to maintain vigilance, especially during the festive season. The suspects are expected to be charged in court after the investigation concludes.
This breakthrough underscores the commitment of the Enugu State Police Command to ensuring safety and combating crime during the end-of-year celebrations.
