The Yobe State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has apprehended three suspects allegedly involved in ATM fraud schemes, marking a significant milestone in the fight against cybercrime in the state.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, revealed that the arrests were made by the State Intelligence Department (SID) on December 6, 2024.
The suspects, identified as Sani Kasim (35), Nura Umaru (24), and Umar Suleman (22), were reportedly part of a criminal syndicate targeting ATM users. “The suspects confessed to using deceptive methods to obtain PIN numbers from unsuspecting bank customers,” said Abdulkarim.
According to the police, the group would approach victims under the guise of offering assistance, swap their ATM cards, and later withdraw funds from their accounts.
During the operation, law enforcement recovered 47 ATM cards, four cellphones, and a Mercedes Benz vehicle believed to have been used in the fraud.
DSP Abdulkarim also disclosed that six victims, including a visually impaired individual who lost N181,550, have come forward to identify the suspects and report their losses.
The police have urged residents to exercise caution when using ATMs and to avoid accepting unsolicited help from strangers. The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, with authorities working to uncover additional victims and accomplices.
This development underscores the Yobe State Police Command’s commitment to tackling financial crimes and safeguarding residents from fraudsters.
