In a move marking the end of a significant chapter in Nigerian music, Olamide has confirmed that he peacefully allowed Asake to terminate his contract with YBNL Music. The parting comes after years of collaboration, with Asake rising to stardom through the label.
Asake, who joined YBNL in 2022, rose to prominence with hits like *Sungba* and made history by selling out the O2 Arena twice. Under the terms of the split, Asake retains the masters to all the music he recorded while at YBNL. However, the two parties have agreed to a royalty split that will last for the remaining duration of the original contract, which is expected to be a minimum of 10 years.
Olamide, the founder of YBNL, expressed his support for Asake’s decision to move on, emphasizing that his primary goal in creating the label was to help young talent grow, not to accumulate wealth. “I didn’t create YBNL because I wanted to make money. I created it because I wanted to see other young people grow, so if any artist under me wants to leave, they are free. Asake has done his part, and I’m proud of him,” Olamide reportedly said.
Since the termination of the contract, Asake has made his departure clear by removing all YBNL-related content from his social media platforms and unfollowing everyone, including Olamide.
The contract dissolution occurred a few months after the release of Asake's *Lungu* album. Sources revealed that after the contract expired, Olamide offered Asake a new deal, but the artist declined. Despite several attempts by Olamide to persuade him to stay, Asake chose to pursue an independent path, ultimately walking out of the negotiations two weeks ago.
Asake’s decision marks a new era for the artist, as he steps away from the label that helped shape his career, with plans to manage his music and future independently.
