A teacher, Adebayo Osayemi, has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing his employer’s phone and money, totaling N237,000.
The ruling was delivered by Chief Magistrate Mrs. O.O. Latunji at the Mapo Magistrate’s Court in Ibadan. Latunji sentenced Osayemi to two years of hard labor without the option of a fine, following a guilty plea and evidence provided by the prosecution.
The police prosecution, Inspector Oluseye Akinola, told the court that Osayemi committed the crime on January 13 at No. 3 Church Street, Orita-Challenge, Ibadan, Oyo State. According to the prosecution, Osayemi carefully monitored the movements of Funmilayo Adesinmi, the complainant and owner of Montessori Gofas Nursery and Primary School, before stealing from her office.
Adesinmi had briefly left her office to buy food from a nearby market, leaving three children in the school. It was during this time that Osayemi entered the office and stole €20 (approximately N35,000) and a Techno Smart 4 phone valued at N95,000 from Adesinmi’s desk.
The crime was discovered when Adesinmi’s daughter saw Osayemi entering the office. The missing items were later traced to Osayemi, who had also transferred N82,000 from Adesinmi’s Money Point account and N25,000 from her First Bank account to his own Opay and UBA accounts.
The charges against Osayemi contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. II Law of Oyo State 2000.
